THE DAY

The Dolomites Day, Stop by Stop

What actually happens across twelve hours from Venice — the drive, the lakes, the peaks and the long road home.

An early start and a long climb

The day begins early in Venice — often a 7-ish departure, with a Mestre or Treviso pickup — because the drive north is 2.5 to 3 hours and the aim is to reach the high country before the afternoon cloud. The first stretch crosses the Veneto plain and climbs the Piave valley; the scenery builds slowly, then all at once, as the road gains height past Belluno and the first rock walls appear. Settle in and treat the climb as the overture.

Cortina, Misurina and the peaks

The van delivers you into the Ampezzo valley and Cortina, then climbs on to Lake Misurina and the approach to the Tre Cime. This is the heart of the day: the mirror lake, the three towers from the road-head, the high passes with peaks over every bend. Stops are short and the pace is brisk — a day tour trades depth for breadth — but each stop is a place you'd struggle to reach any other way from Venice.

A lake, a lunch, and free time

Depending on the itinerary you'll get a lunch-and-stroll stop in Cortina and, on some trips, a visit to Lake Braies further north. This is your chance to eat, warm up, and stand still among the mountains rather than watching them through a window. Use the free time to get a proper meal and a coffee — lunch usually isn't included — and to simply take in the scale of the place before the return leg.

The long road home

The return retraces the descent south, the peaks shrinking in the mirrors as the road drops back toward the plain, and you'll usually reach Venice in the early evening. It's a big day — twelve hours, most of two vertical kilometres climbed and descended, a corner of the high Alps seen and left behind. Plan a quiet evening after it; you'll be tired in the best way, with the towers still in your eyes.
